Hang Em High, A Classic Remade: Download available

crysis-2009-05-25-02-13-32-85Hang em High was one of my favorite multiplayer maps in any game I have ever played.  There was just something about that map that provided the necessary element of danger and balance to provide its players with an exciting, yet rewarding experience as they played with and against others.  Recently, I started playing Crysis a lot more online and I felt the maps for instant action weren’t too exciting and there wasn’t a wide selection at all.  Luckily the game came with the Sandbox Editor 2, so I decided I would make some of my own maps.

I began to think about what maps I could create from other games.  Of course the first map that came to mind was Hang Em High.  After I started working on the map, I thought of how ironic it was, I was taking such a simple looking map and putting it into a game that is arguably still the best looking game out there today.  Crysis puts you into some of the most beautiful looking environments a game can give you.  Albeit its a bit taxing on your GPU if you play on Very High settings at a high resolution. I looked past that as the map started to come together and I play tested it with some friends of mine.

After playing on the map for several hours, we all decided that it was just as fun as it used to be back when we played Halo 1.  The map to seemed to provide more engagement between players and continuous action throughout most of the rounds. Something I felt Crysis was not doing with the Instant Action maps that shipped with the game.  I noted to my friend that we were playing the best looking game on the market today, but on a map that was dull and lacked any color or life to it.  We both then expressed that even though this was the case, we were having a damn good time.

Since this was a reconstruction from scratch, there are some things missing or that just aren’t 100%.  For the most part I did my best to recreate the map.  One notable thing is the lack of the shotgun tunnel and enclosed ramp. Both have been excluded from this rebuild of Hang Em High.  It doesn’t change the map too much, but there are times you find yourself wishing it was there.  Another thing is falling from high up, you’ll have to be a little more careful, especially if you don’t have maximum armor. Other than that there really aren’t too many other notable differences.

The map is available for any of those who would like to have it.  Spread it around and have fun!  Use the Forums to organize games with others. I will tweet when I am playing so follow me on Twitter if you’d like to maybe play Crysis sometime!
