Microsoft seems pretty confident that Sony will end up back in third place pretty soon. Spokesman David Dennis recently talked about the NPD numbers which put the Playstation 3 at number one with 491,800 units sold. Mr Dennis said that they “expected Sony to have a great month” after the price cut of the PS3 to $299.99(USD).
Dennis also said that,
We expect it to be short-term and we expect them to be back down to third place soon like they’ve always been.
Pretty big words and seems like they are a little overconfident at the moment. Dennis followed that up by saying,
Across all categories, the Xbox 360 platform contributed the most to industry unit and dollar sales as sales of 360 hardware, software and accessories comprised 32 percent of the month’s revenues
While that might be true, Steven Totilo of Kotaku recently told the Hip Hop Gamer that he felt that the PS3 has a stronger line-up this holiday seasons than the 360. With that said, I would have to agree and have to think that the PS3 will more than likely stay where it is for the holiday season. Earlier this year I wrote an article saying how I felt the PS3 would beat out the 360 for many different reasons.
I’m going to have to go ahead and disagree with Mr Dennis. While the 360 might have contributed more overall, with blockbuster titles like Uncharted 2 going up against the mediocre Halo 3: ODST this holiday, and God of War III next year, I feel the PS3 will stay on top for longer than Mr Dennis expects.
Only time can tell if this is true, but do you feel the PS3 will drop back down to third or did they just have a slow start to the race? To me, Microsoft has been sprinting to the finish line, while Sony has been taking their time. There is a saying, “slow and steady wins the race.” Do you feel this applies to the present situation in the “console wars?”
PS3 takes top spot in U.S. for first time [Seattlepi]

i think ps3 wont get 3rd for a while considering all the games that came out for 360 like halo 3 odst mw2 froza 3 unless theres more new ps3 games out there i dont know about i really dont pay attention to ps3 that much lol
I dont think the PS3 is going to go back to third for quite a while. With the price drop and the Holidays coming up there is no reason not to buy one and people realize this.
360 atw….idk tho since prices dropped yeah i think i would buy one and no i think they are maybe going to be 2nd….honstly idc….i feel like the wii dominates all consoles (pshh off topic much)….who know’s??
Well, If PS3 gets in 3rd place, it gets in 3rd place, unless they make better quality gameplay games.
Hmm…pretty strong words. I think the PS3 is going to have a very strong holiday, and even the 360 owners who have been on the fence about getting a PS3 are going to jump in. The only thing that MS has going for it is a huge install base and a ridiculous attach rate. PS3 really has the momentum right now, we’ll see what happens.
It’s hard to say. All the consoles have good stuff either coming out, or just recently released. Call me crazy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wii came back out on top. It’s down to $199 and there are more out there making them much more accessible this year. As for the 360 and PS3, I figure they’ll be neck and neck this holiday. PS3 will be 2nd because of the price drop. It won’t win by much though.
Although the PS3 doesn’t have many exclusive games it will get better in time, don’t worry.
Console sales figures mean nothing to me, I don’t get a cut of the profits.
Whoever has the cheapest console with the most and best games wins.
This is how I see the standings will be soon:
1. Xbox 360
2. PS3
3.Wii
Pretty much whoever wanted a Wii has already bought one. But I don’t think PS3 will drop all the way back down to 3rd.
This holiday season i bet alot of people are gonna get a ps3,It’s at the great price of $300.
Well, sure it’s going to drop back to third. Uncharted 2 is really the only highlight right now and what are the sales on it? I know it’s high, but compared to Halo ODST (which sold over 2.5 MILLION copies) you are breaking about even I would think. But full sales figures aren’t released yet for Uncharted 2 that I cna find.
In any case, that is one game. What happens when Left 4 Dead 2 gets released? That game isn’t going to be on PS3 and had more than double the pre-orders of L4D ever did back in July.
I think it’ll be close thru the holiday season, possibly more PS3s being sold than 360s for the fact that people already with a 360 will be getting PS3s for Christmas now that they are cheaper.
It’s a quality vs quantity thing , SURE l4d2 will be great. But its not a system seller viper. Thats the BIGGEST flaw with your argument here. Titles that sell systems should be the ones you reference. Sure ODST sold a lot, and you obviously dont read very much because uncharted was estimated to have sold 1 million in the first week.
So before you go arguing points. do a little research
ohh and take into consideration how many of those pre-orders were PC, dont forget viper, l4d2 is on PC AND 360. Sure it doubled pre-orders, dont forget how big the PC community for that game is too. While some boycotted, the others still want the game and Im sure pre-ordered.
sony get some good games out only have intrest in uncharted 2 and the new ratchet and clank wheres more resistance games at?
I actually also think that the PS3 is going to drop back to third. The reason I think this is that I really don’t think that the PS3′s games are going to really affect hardware sales for that long.
I think it’s going to have to do more with gamer consciousness. I have a PS3, and I love it, but everywhere around me, all I hear is talk of the Xbox 360, and most of all, their Xbox Live service.
And believe it or not, a common question I got when I told them I had a PS3, was something along the lines of, “Do you even like it?”
While this reaction I got was maybe from about 20-30 people, I really do feel that this is the general reaction towards the PS3. That being said, I hope I’m wrong – I really do.
I love the PS3, and I want more people to enjoy what that console has to offer. But like Kreyg, only time will tell.
I don’t think Sony will end the season at number 3 nor do I think they will end on top. Although the bigger titles like MW2 and Assassin’s Creed II being released on both consoles each system has their “deals.”
The 360 has the MW2 bundle that was all know is amazing and PS3′s equally amazing Uncharted 2 bundle. See the thing about this to me I can buy the PS3 bundle and play both great games. Uncharted 2 isn’t out for the 360. So If was to have a choice which one to buy, PS3 bundle would be the choice.
Now that I’m thinking out it PS3 does have a fairly good chance to take the top spot by the seasons end. I say what will make consumers buy your console or the bundle deals, but as we’ve seen in the past the 360′s bundles usually come with crap games.
Time will tell..
Sounds like Microsoft is issuing a challenge lol. I think the “slow and steady wins the race” can apply to this situation of video games. If you rush work on something, then most likely, it won’t be as good as one that took time and effort to create. Something like that
The PS3 won’t go down to 3rd place, not for the time being.
