What would you do if you lost 4.7 billion dollars since 2006? Well, you’d probably be Sony. According to Sony’s investor relation, since the launch of the PS3 in 2006, Sony has managed to lose a total of 4.7 BILLION dollars on PS3.
- FY 2007: -$1,970,923,859
- FY 2008: -$1,079,994,103
- FY 2009: -$577,207,240
- FY 10Q1: -$413,541,667
- FY 10Q2: -$653,333,333
The numbers show that the Playstation 3 has not been doing Sony any favors since it’s launch. The original Xbox suffered almost the same losses from 2002-2005 losing M$ 4.2 billion. Nintendo on the other hand has stayed strong and kept profits rolling in and has made an average of $1,737,758,422 a year since 1998. Go Nintendo huh?
You can take a look at the Investor Relation numbers here on this chart.

As you can see, Nintendo is king of making money in the video game industry. You have to wonder how long it will take Sony to bounce back from this. It took MS from 2002-2008 to finally make the Xbox division profitable, will it take Sony 6 years to get the Playstation division back in the green? As for Nintendo, I guess they weren’t lying in the pic below.

Playstation sacrificed a lot to give us a quality system. Like Harkins said, they made a $800+ system and sold it for $200 less. Thats a big loss. Not only that, but the playstation network is free of charge. Granted, they have other packages you can get for exclusive content, but I can already play online, and watch Netflix, so I personally don’t use it. Its a shame to see that they are loosing money, but hopefully they can regain it in the long run.. And that picture is funny as hell xD haha
This Generation was suppose to be about graphics because thats the only thing ppl complained about so Sony/Microsoft stepped up there game to bring HD. The Wii did not. While i “like” the Wii and love a few games on it, it just annoys me that ppl say the Wii is better because its not. Sony listened and gave the best console at launch. The Wii start price $250 and im not 100% sure but was making like $10 dollars a system Xbox 360 was $400 and im pretty sure this was losing money but nothing major. The Ps3 on the other hand was being built for like $844 and being sold for $600. Then people hav the fucking nerve to says its overpriced? YOU PPL DEMANDED HD GAMING! And Sony gave you that with everything they backed into the system. So when they heard you about it being over priced what they do to make it cheaper? They took out a few things 2 USB ports, and B/C with PS2 games. Then you bitch on and on about not having B/C. Make up your mind ppl its fucking annoying! Sorry for all the cussing and long post. Just thought it was something id share.
cool story bro
I get what you’re saying. The numbers above are from 1998 – on
i need 100,000 in two days fast
The problem with PS3 is that it wants to make back money and get profits with games, even though there aren’t a whole lot of them since people mostly get cross-platform games on the 360. So, the PS3 only has exclusives as major money makers.
hahah the 1st sentence was funny :p….anywho yeah like i said the wii shouldn’t be in the console wars….it already dominates….and i want one 2
you can say what you want, Nintendo still knows how to make the most money.
wow the ps3 is a much better system then the wii. i know how they are doing it maybe because its a cheap a*s system and they can just keep a profit of the system not the games because i only have a wii system there games suck. but maybe it prints money. we may never know
Doesn’t it also affect that Nintendo is HUGE is Japan as well?
Aren’t they like 90% of consoles in Japan compared to Sony/Microsoft?
Hmmm i think he reason makes so much money because they are more innovative with their games and most are mostly aimed toward Kids. They also have games like Wii sport and Wii resort are good for some older people who never gamed before. AND KREYG BEST GIF IN THE WORLD ^__^ lol xD
Omg i have to say that gif
opps I ment save
wow, 4.7bil dollars, and i just loled @ the will printing out 1mil dollars, i wish it printed out $1000 bills
ROFL that picture is awesome. Honestly I’m not too surprised over this as Sony really has alienated their customers and went way overboard with the PS3.
That’s a lot of lost money from Sony and MS both. It’s amazing how Nintendo continuously makes money hand over fist, but I’m guessing numbers are Wii and DS which make a killing all around the world.
but in these times it’s very hard to make money while people are out of money you would except to lose profit in the recession which started sometime in 2007
so it was a bad time with bad price people are not going to buy it that’s how you lose net profit
every company will make a net lose its hard in theses time but the ps3 going to be on the market for at least another 8-10 years i could see profit starting to come up when the recession is over but sony and Microsoft there big company which sony makes profit from movies tv and pc ect… but i would see job cuts coming
Sony needs to step up their game if they want to stay in this, hopefully E3 will have some good Sony updates.
I feel sorry for Sony they made a good product and they are hurting for it. Nintendo Made a piece of crap that doesn’t even pass their last gens specs. I am not being a fanboy or anything. I am Just an angry gamer that bout the wii when it first came out. Boy was I disappointed. I am going to get a Ps3 at the end of the year though so all will be well. I hope this doesn’t hurt Sony they don’t deserve it.
The only reason nintendo makes much more money is because they put less into their system. Think about it. Motion control was out years before by sony with the nintendo eye. Nintendo seems to copyed it. Microsoft and Sony put alot of money thought and graphics into their systems. And seriously guys how far has nintendo advanced over the years. Think about it it went from the 64 with 3d SNES type graphics to gamecube which was a update on look but still sorta the same thing. then the wii huge update in graphics but compared to the ps2 its about that level. So technicly Nintendo is behind in system. But since its cheaper more people buy it and their are alot of games that arnt even good like take for example. M&M’s Cart racing. yeah. if you have heard of it you should know its worse than a mutitude of everything.
playstation eye *
I disagree with two things. the N64 having “3D SNES type graphics” and saying they havent come along way. While their systems might have had inferior libraries of games the last few generations, their systems hardware was pretty evenly matched with its opponents of each generation until now, because we all know the wii has gamecube like graphics. But Consider this, they are a business, and what do businesses want to do? Make money. Nintendo does a damn good job of it regardless of what their graphics or technology is. They have been around in gaming since the 1980s. Whatever they are doing has worked and is still working over the last almost 30 years.
I’d have to agree with Kreyg on this one. Nintendo may not have to many games in it’s latest library of games(2000-2009). But they have been around forever, and if anybody knows how to make a good game it’s Nintendo. In the earlier days of their business, they were pumping out some of the greatest and most well known video games of all time. The reason Sony is losing money, is because they’re getting greedy, making people pay for almost everything, Microsoft is getting that way too nowadays, but when has Bill Gates NOT been a money hoar? PS3 may have amazing graphics but the fact of the matter is that they aren’t able to produce enough good titles fast enough for their consumer base to be pleased. Sure, every now and then they get titles like Uncharted 2, FF13, GoW3, LBP, etc. But they don’t come out frequent enough, and aren’t supported heavily by Sony most of the time by things such as DLC and Expansions. Nintendo is good about bundling their money into several areas of game design, production, shipment, consumer base, and support. Basically, Nintendo is like one of the smart stock brokers during the Stock Market crash in ’28. They saw it coming, got ready for it, then made all the right choices to: 1. Keep all their money. 2. Make more money whilst everyone else loses money. And those ideals they are very good at.
Nintendo seem like they have the best business strategy in not losing money from the product they’re selling. Pretty crazy idea huh?
Best gif ever!!
Also Nintendo only has profits :O
nintendo is a gaming company only thats why they need profits on the wii and ds
yeah, king, but the numbers are for each companies gaming divisions, not as a whole company.
sony and microsoft have other divisions that can have higher profits than the losses
True, but we’re focusing solely on the gaming divisions here
Well that is what Sony gets for making the PlayStation cost more to make then they sell it for, Same with M$. I also wish I had 4.7 billion to lose.
When I get my paycheck every other week I get all giddy. Let alone losing 4.7 BIRRION DORRAH!
