Are Fanboys Really Gamers?

First we must ask ourselves what the term “gamer” means.  The dictionary defines the word gamer as, “a person who plays games.”  To me, being a gamer always meant playing games regardless of console or your personal feelings towards other games.  This is where I feel fanboys differ than gamers.  Fanboys tend to be more passionate towards one thing and have trouble diversifying or expanding their closed minds.  Although there are people who prefer certain genres of games, for the most part they don’t act like fanboys.

While the dictionary does not have a definition for the term “fanboy,” the urban dictionary has a pretty accurate description.  The urban dictionary definition for fanboys is, “A passionate fan of various elements of geek culture (e.g. sci-fi, comics, Star Wars, video games, anime, etc.), but who lets his passion override social graces.” Sounds pretty accurate, doesn’t it?

The first thing about fanboys as opposed to gamers is the way they present their ideas and arguments.  Fanboys will attack you up and down if you disagree with what they have to say about their beloved console or game.  Have you ever heard an argument between a PS3 and 360 fanboy?  While they know their system inside and out, they will continually bash each other and throw insults until one of them finally gives up.  They hold a very strong opinion and are willing to yell, scream, and make an ass of themselves to get their point across.

There are even times when fanboys exhibit qualities of religious extremists.  They want you to only see their view and their view only and are ready to attack if you disagree.  Back in February, I broadcasted Killzone 2 a few days early on Justin.tv.  While I was playing I said things I didn’t like about the game and said I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I thought I would.  I never said I hated it or that it was bad, I just wasn’t into it as much as I initally thought I was going to be.

I did not know at that time that word had gotten out to many different forums across the internet and a lot of die hard Killzone fans were watching.  I was bashed on the different forums, my channel chat was spammed beyond belief, and I was instantly labeled a “360 fanboy” or “Halo Fanboy” because I disagreed with their feelings on a game they hadn’t even played yet.  It all seems stupid to me, I played the entire game despite the things I didn’t like at first and ended up enjoying the game more and more as it progressed.  It just took a little longer for me to get into.

The whole incident was a case of fanboys at their finest.  They attacked the instant there was a disagreement with their personal opinion.  There is a saying, “Opinions are like assholes, everyone’s got one.”  With that, you would think that fanboys would just respect other peoples opinions because other people for the most part respect theirs.  People just don’t respect the way fanboys let thier opinions override their social graces.

There are great games on different consoles, and fanboys will shut themselves out to these great experiences because of their stubbornness.  So with all that I’ve said, I say, no, fanboys are NOT gamers.  Some fanboys will never play games like Resistance, Killzone, Halo, Gears of War, etc because of their stubbornness.  A true gamer would at least try these games regardless of the console they are on(I used those games as an example because these games seem to have a lot of fanboys).

In conclusion, I hope that someday fanboys one day can expand their minds and not limit themselves.  You’re missing out on a whole world of great games and the right to call yourself a gamer.

I think we had an older question on the site of a similar nature and my opinion has not changed. Fanboyism stems from jealousy at not beig able to own all of the consoles and reap the rewards of each.

There is no way that I’m going to pay $300 plus $50 a year more to buy a 360, if i wanted to I would have bought 1, aswell as the money i paid for my ps3. But because i don’t want to spend that money doesn’t make me a fanboy. The argument will never stop b/c if asked why i bought a ps3 i would respond, “because I think it is a better system.” and automatically I am labeled a fanboy. The only part of your piece i don’t agree with is…”To me, being a gamer always meant playing games regardless of console or your personal feelings towards other games.” The only reason i disagree is b/c since I own a ps3 and not a 360, i will never play a 360 game b/c i dont own one,or have access to one, but according to that statement i am not a gamer b/c i didn’t buy every console. I play multiple hours a day of videogames, so even though i only own one console i consider myself a gamer. That statement on what a gamer is, means that only people who own or have access to all consoles are gamers which i do not agree with. You can be a gamer if you only play on one system, as long as you don’t go around trying to tell people why their purchases were wrong.

I don’t think they really are gamers in the sense that they are unwilling to try other platforms. My example is how much like the way that a great chef or a person who loves food wouldn’t want to only do like French dishes. He would want to try to eat or make Mexican or Chinese food or food from another country. The same applies with games. If you refuse to try to do something different and attack those who don’t agree with your tastes, then we should pity you simply because you have no idea what you are missing.

Either that or your just a know-nothing 12-year old poser who doesn’t know shit about your so-called “passion”.

Well to me Fanboys can and can’t be gamers. Reason is because they can look at something cool and like it and look for things on the internet to see whats going on with this thing or person they like. Example: Metroid or Legend of Zelda. But when Fanboys are gamers they’ll play a game and enjoy it and might want to play more of it. But Fanboys can Over bound themselves because they can take it to far by buying posters or wearing shirts and maybe even name themselves of the content they like, for instance someone on JTV can have an account name of Final_Fantasy798 (I don’t no what you guys do) But all i’m saying is they can be both.

To me, a gamer is anybody who plays games and enjoys them. A fanboy is a person who is completely biased towards one idea/object and refuses to accept anything else.

I guess I’m a gamer then, I love to try every game and don’t care on what console it’s on. I don’t just like one game or console and then fight other people who like different from me. I think that’s a waste of time arguing for no reason. I rather be a gamer and have fun, then argue about nonsense about different consoles and games. Some people don’t even try the game or console, they just think after they tried theirs out, they can talk shit about other consoles. They have no knowledge of that particular item or console they are arguing about. Some people are just ignorant about some things like that and still try to talk shit. I’m sure a lot of you would agree.

A:Because they’re spineless, gutless and have no heart.

  17. Psych101 November 2, 2009 at 17:06 - Reply

Simply put a “Gamer” is one who loves games (all games) regardless of where they are or what they’re playing on.

I see a “Fanboy” as one with gaming ignorace, lacks and/or limitations. They seek console retaliation due to their anger and frustrations which in turn makes them fell better about themselves and the choices they’ve made.

Limit your gaming experience and YOU will be the only one missing out.

Fanboys are not cool. Ok i admit i dont have a PS3 and arent too fussed about getting one but that doesnt mean i think its a bad console. I actually had to borrow a friends PS3 to play some games i wanted to like MGS4 and LBP. But at the end of the day my xbox is my favourite console. But i believe in equal rights to all consoles :P

  19. keller32 November 2, 2009 at 13:48 - Reply

Of course they don’t, they wouldn’t know what other consoles are like unless they’ve tried them.

Wow, finally, someone else said it! Man, is this article ever true. These “hardcore” guys like to think of themselves as gamers but they seriously are the biggest jokes of all. I have all three consoles and realize that it’s “horses for courses” so to each its own. The shooter crowd is generally the first to call someone a fanboy and ironically, they are even bigger fanboys. I mean, when someone calls another a fanboy, they are generally just offended because the object of their own fanboyism had just went under attack. Thanks for the article.

  22. John November 2, 2009 at 12:30 - Reply

@Max : I don’t really think fanboys deserve any sort of respect at all tbh. In my honest oppionion, I don’t think they’re doing anything to deserve it. All they’re doing is limiting theirselves. On each and every console there are great games that they are missing out on just because they are stubborn assholes that whine and cry that there is competition out there. That’s why i own a 360, a ps3, and a wii. my 360 sports great games like Halo, Gears, and many other exclusives. My ps3 sports greats such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Little big planet, and Killzone. The Wii sports greats such as Mario Galaxy, and Legend of Zelda. There are just so many awesome games out their with awesome gameplay, and amazing stories that shouldn’t be missed.
So there’s my oppinion. Real gamers are open minded enough to try anything.

    • The DUDE November 2, 2009 at 11:15 - Reply

There is three type of gamers. Casual, no need to explain.
      Hardcore and GAMERS.

Hardcore are usually r*t*r**d players that only enjoy FPS and cant enjoy anything else, the fanboys are included in the hardcore type. Hardcore include: Flamers, spammers, yellers, every bad thing. They screams at the “unfair advantage” of private chatting, killing in the back and the true meaning of Free For All: Everyone can do anything, in their case they call unfair advantage that players make alliance in a result games developpers have to integrate an anti-cheating system to detect the players who listen to the actual rule of Free For All and ban them.
Hardcore are the reasons why gaming is seeing as a bad thing, they are the reason of every pain in the gaming industries.

Actual/Real Gamers enjoy many games type. They see each weakness and each good points of every console. They try to enjoy competition and to ignore hardcore and MLG. They are up-to-date on news in their favorite games.

  25. Max November 2, 2009 at 10:28 - Reply

They’re called fanboys for a reason. They’re dedicated fans to their own console. I believe they deserve some sort of respect.

  26. Kenyi November 2, 2009 at 04:15 - Reply

I agree. Fanboys aren’t gamers, they are people which desperately cling to a single console, blind for all other things, and not willing to try other stuff out. Let’s take a typical Xbox360 fanboy. If you whip out some awesome PS3 exclusives such as Valkyria Chronicles, InFamous or Demon’s Souls, they would bitch on it for the sole fact that it’s a PS3 based game.

Though, somewhere I believe that fanboys can never be completely stuck up with themselves. I’m sure they check out video’s of PS3 (or, if it’s a PS3 fanboy, Xbox360) games and think “hmm… actually looks pretty awesome”.

You can’t tell me that a PS3 fanboy never thought “fuck, L4D is actually pretty epic”, or a Xbox360 fanboy thinking “Dammit, Demon’s Souls look pretty cool”

    That’s just not humanly possible.

Ok when did killzone 2 become the face of PS3. Personaly i like Killzone better than the second one. Maybe because you could go stealth heavy or medium in killzone. but back to fanboys. yeah they do suck. I like PS3 more that 360 but thats because I cant afford the system and all the extra stuff that comes with it. I checked at my local game crazy for a headset and a couple usb ports for the ps3 and they told me that was 60 bucks. While the wireless adapter for 360 is a hundred. Some of the stuff just makes microsoft seem money grubing. But if there is some way we could join fan boys passion and our smarts. We could make the gaming world a much better place where they games would be cheaper and they wouldnt try and sell us every little part to the system.

Nice article kreyg. I agree with u. I can’t understand why fanboys are the way they are. I find it stupid that just because a game is on another system they won’t play it. I don’t think fanboys are gamers because they are arguing about gaming. Gaming is never meant to be serious, its a form of entertainment, you’re supposed to enjoy it, not argue about it.

  33. MrTastyDDR November 1, 2009 at 19:11 - Reply

And also, you know what the funny thing is? Some fanboys for example…. a 360 or PS3, whatever, that they are a fanboy over don’t even HAVE that console. So pretty much Kreyg summed up what I feel about Fanboys.

  36. jesus guy November 1, 2009 at 18:04 - Reply

well a fraction of the fanboys are actual gamers but most are young teens trying to get noticed, so my vote is with, fanboys are not real gamers

No matter how passionate you are about something once you stop seeing the other side of the situation and refuse to listen to any reason you are a fanboy. I don’t think you should be called a gamer at that point because you’re giving all of us a bad name but its not for me to say that “fanboys ain’t gamers”.

  39. WWII November 1, 2009 at 17:08 - Reply

    Sega does what Nintendon’t!

What is a fanboy? I can openly say that I am a Playstation fanboy (not a Sony fanboy) and I have an Xbox 360, a Wii and 2 beautiful PS3(a fat 60GB and a 120GB slim).

As you can see, I have all the current gen consoles, I’m bot missing on any game but I still say that the X360 sucks more than your mother’s cunt and I can make a huge list of why I said that. The same with the Wii, another useless piece of sh1t.

Now I think that I’m the living prove of your wrong conclusion. You cannot determine if someone is a fanboy just based on the games he plays or the console he owns.

The urban dictionary definition it’s accurate, you blog or whatever is this it’s as useless as the X360 and Wii.

-Now I’m going back to Valkyria Chronicles. -peace =)

    • Kreyg November 1, 2009 at 17:17 - Reply

See, you prefer one over the other, but you own all 3, its not like you deny yourself the pleasure of enjoying other games because you’re stubborn.

I think my point for this post was more at the over the top fanboys who will literally deny themselves playing a great game because its on another console or w/e

You think the PlayStation 3 is the GREATEST thing out there since funnel cakes, and that is fine with me. However, that does not automatically make the other competitors, Xbox and Wii, horrible.

You are not a PlayStation fanboy because you own a PS3. You are a fanboy for attacking the other consoles. Why can’t you guys accept the fact that all three consoles have their advantages and disadvantages?

i love my 360 but for ppl that say the community is better then “other” consoles they must be high on something. everytime i play halo i get called a fag or something of that nature by what sounds like a lil kid going thru puberty. i love both my consoles but its clear as daylight which console has the less douchebaggy service. srry bout ranting the fanboy subject just upsets me.
