Is a Paid Subscription Service Coming to PSN? [UPDATED!]

Could the end of free online gameplay for the PlayStation 3 be upon us, or is a new optional service on the way? In a recent Media/Investor conference, a slide that related to the PlayStation Network stated that there will be a “new revenue stream from subscription.”

The way it is worded makes it sound like there could possibly be a subscription similar to Xbox live on its way to PSN. As of right now, there really is not much information, so it would be best not to speculate as to what the “subscription” could be for.

The slide below is from the conference(click to enlarge).  As soon as more information on this is made available we will update you.

What do you think it could possibly be?  Do you think that Sony is going to start to charge users for online services?

Really, this isn’t a bad thing if it’s true. A subscription service would allow them to put more money into PSN and make large improvements in their online service.

I hope this wasn’t the excuse for them delaying cross-game invites and chat, God I hope not.

I can tell you if it does become a paid service, I expect it to be TONS better than it is now. It would not shock me at all if it became a paid service. I have no problem paying for XBL, it is just so much better and smoother.

@PartyPat….even talking about fanboys is a prime example of faggy fanboyism and you are pulling it off nicely…..especially calling someone a fanboy stfu you homo. Someone has to pay for fucking bandwidth that gets eaten up when you download something and believe me when i say sony wont pay for it forever….the ps2 was free cuz there was no such thing as downloading add-on’s for a game then….but now with video, games and add-on’s that get downloaded millions of times a day…sony is probably starting to feel a drag on the ol pocket book. Time to get some of that back.

Bro, you could have left out the name calling and the attack on PartyPat. Everyone has a right to their own opinion and everyone should respect that right, even if you disagree.

I doubt they are going to make you pay to go online. Like someone said earlier its like paying for the internet twice.. Plus I think they would have done it by now. With facebook and youtube all setup through there Im sure they have enough sponsors or ads or whatever it takes to keep it free.

Everyone is ripping PS3 fanboys yet this isn’t even a console battle topic and you xbox kids are already starting bs. hahah. Any FANBOY is gay. Peace

    What the fuck?

First of all it isnt so.

The advantage to free online play is because you can go online with the ps3. Surfing the web or whatever.

So that would mean that you pay double , paying for the internet and then paying to use the internet on your ps3.

Well if they do, it’ll shut up the PS fanboys who say things like “Xbox is soooo G4Y, you have to pay for online s3rvice, lolzosaurus”

If it does go to a service they’ll need to host their own servers instead of having 3rd parties do it.

If they do end up charging, I’ll feel a lot better in my decision to get an xbox.

But, charging for a crappy online is not the way to go. Unless they beef it up…A LOT…they’re screwed for sales.

PSN is free, but I don’t see anything better than XBL. It does have its features (Internet Browser, Home) but nothing much more than XBL.

I don’t mind paying if it means faster download speeds. PSN is good considering it’s free, but if Sony could use my money to get the data through the tubes faster I’d be a happy man.

Oh yeah its inevitable. Anyway I never hear PS3 owners say PSN is good I only hear them say its free. Am I off base on that?

I noticed that, too, back when I only owned an Xbox 360 and Wii. Well I got my PS3 a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve noticed XBL is much higher quality than PSN. PSN is free…that’s about the only praise I can sing for it.

The lack of knowledge in this comment section is hilarious.

      1) Kaz already said, “IT will be in ADDITION to existing Features.”

      2) Xbox DOES NOT USE DEDICATED SERVERS for gaming

      3) More PS3 games use dedicated servers then xbox games

      4) XBL vs. PSN makes ZERO difference when it comes to ONLINE GAMING.

      5) XBL is a service feed, Not because of the acutal “Serice” (cough lack there of), but instead because they are making YOU pay for the xbox operating system.

      6) Paying to Play games online, that already have online coded and said companies hostnig their servers is nothing short of MORONIC. Your paying for somethign that is inherently already payed for. (buying game and Internet access from ISP)
