Why I Don’t Play World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft has turned 5 this week.  5 years ago a lot of us began our addiction and lost our friends.  A few weeks back I was asked by Kotaku’s Owen Good to write a short bit as to why I personally don’t play World of Warcraft.  I was more than willing to do it.

There have been many reasons why I don’t play WoW.  While I won’t ruin it for you here, I suggest you check out Owen’s article(it’s really good) in it’s entirety along with my answer and everyone else’s answer as to why we don’t play World of Warcraft.

Full Article: Why I Don’t Play World of Warcraft [Kotaku]

Thanks Owen for asking me to be a part of it!

I remembered being addicted to it, reached lvl 70, and that was it. I felt like a wasted my life.

I never played WoW, but my roommate always tried to get me to play it. Back in high school me and my friends did a video for an english project about the addiction to gaming. We used WoW as an example game and have one of us act as the gamer. Although it may not be entirely true we protrated the gamer at first enjoy the game, but as time increased their intensity and dedication to the game trumped friends and family; Refusing to answer phone calls or go out with friends.

I have played a mmorpg but it got old pretty quick. My friend who would play with me would lose interest and i generally would follow that trend.

P2p games is something I never really liked. Having to pay on top of the actual game could make the cost ramp up, and i never had that kind of money to spend on just one game. So naturally I stayed away from those.

I personally get tired of playing one type of game too long. When you play long enough to dream about being in the game or playing the game in your dreams, then you need to stop and do something else. This does happen to me sometimes and maybe just going outside for fresh air once in a while or reading a book keeps my mind off all the intensity of a game. Maybe take a break, grab some food, or read some articles online. Chatting with friends on like msn helps a lot when the conversations are humorous. Listening to music, or taking up a hobby like guitar, whatever floats your boat. Make sure you have something to wake up to everyday other than WoW and the bare essentials.

I put 5 years into Everquest, and just under 5 years into WoW. And the reason I quit both games is the same. Once you start hitting the higher lvl content(end game content as the cool kids call it), the game stops becoming fun and it starts to become a second job. I realized that I was ignoring my friends and family because I would go to work for 8 hours, and then I’d hop on the game and put in 4-5 hours during the week and upwards of 10-12 hours on the weekend just so I could get the next great piece of weapon or weapon. I don’t regret my time in either Everquest or WoW, I just wish I had managed my time, life and the game a lot better than I did.

I don’t think that was Kregy’s part there. His response was a little bit down the page.

I enjoyed kreygs little interview on there. My cousin is really into Wow and you know what he told me, ” Don’t you ever get into Wow it will waste all your money and time and its really not worth it” Thats coming from someone who plays it daily.

The reason that I never played World of Warcrack is the fear of addiction plus the monthly fee.

Seems that everyone has the same reasons on this. “Afraid of the addiction, can’t pay the fee.” I’m only an addictive person when it comes to things that are actually chemically addictive (caffeine for one) so this reason doesn’t really apply. I could pay the fee if I wanted, and so I have very different reason from all of you guys in the article.
There are two major reasons I don’t play WoW: The fact that I have never really found the appeal in true RPGs. I’m more into different game-types with RPG elements, and the fact that I like to be able to experience a game in the game, and not in a load of shit flashing all over my screen. I’ve seen some of the stuff people add to their WoW HUDs, and they are doing a hell of a lot more reading than playing. At least it seems that way to me.
It’s cool to see somebody getting the opinions of loads of people in the industry together to discuss a topic that many find interesting.
On a side-note, at some point you superceded a blogger and became a person “in the industry” Kreyg. At least it is starting to seem that way to me. Congratulations.

I don’t play WOW either. I asked my older brother about it and he offered for me to try it. I just told him that I would try it some other time. To be honest I don’t know whether my brother still plays it or not.

Great article kreyg! The reason i don’t like MMO’s is cause most don’t really have that much of a story and I hate the repetativeness of all the grinding you have to do.It’s just boring to me.
