Chuck Bittner is petitioning not only to game developers, but console manufacturers as well for custom button remapping for game controls. Bittner calls himself the “Can’t Stand Up Comic” because he is a quadriplegic comedian, in a wheel chair, and with his condition, he has no control over his fingers. This is where Bittner’s trouble with gaming comes from. In order to play he must use his face to control not only the joysticks, but the buttons as well.
As you can imagine, this might make it quite difficult for him to play. Despite his handicap, he still games and seems to be a fan of the Call of Duty Series. Bittner has released a video to show how he must use his controller.
Due to his disability, he is not able to play many of the games out there because of the button layouts. As you can see though, Chuck Bittner is a man who won’t let anything stop him from having fun or playing video games. This guy gets gamer of the year in my book. Some might ask Bittner why he doesn’t have a custom controller made, to which we would reply,
Really to me this is not a solution to this global problem in the gaming universe. While a custom controller would solve my issues and allow me to play more effectively, it would only help me. Others with disabilities would still be in the same situation as I am at the moment. What most gamers in my condition or with other disabilities really need is not an expensive custom setup but the ability to move button locations in a game.
Bittner says in his petition that this feature will be, “beneficial to millions of users/customers” and not only himself. Luckily Binter is only petitioning and isn’t looking to sue anyone like the visually impaired gamer and Erik Estavillo have recently.
There’s no telling if game developers or console manufacturers will have this in the future, but it’s certainly a feature I’m sure a lot of people would like to see in this day and age.
Do you feel that game companies and console manufacturers should have this feature in games and consoles?
