Dark Light
District 9 Map Created for Source Engine

The Source Engine, by design, allows for user generated content to be created more easily than most other engines currently in use. With players using the tools supplied by Valve, map making in particular has never been easier. Games such as Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 all feature the Source Engine.

A user named DaveBrown took it upon himself to take advantage of these tools and create an homage to the movie District 9. The map, titled City 8, requires only Counter-Strike: Source in order to play, and includes the following features,

  • 3 main areas – The Combine Nexus, and then 2 Sectors of slums and wasteland as part of the refugee camp.
  • Doors coded for Tacoscript 1 / 2. Combine-only doors will NOT open in Singleplayer.
  • NPC nodes for ground and striders.
  • Custom graffiti, props, and other Combine textures relevent to City 8.
  • Central Dispatch Interface – an interactive hologram system used for Civil Protection Units to control the Autonomous Dispatch broadcasts across the city.
  • Judgement Waivers – Ability to put the Citadel on full alert which literally shakes the ground as it moves, causes windows to smash and looks awesome.
  • Custom dispatch sounds, alarms, etc.
  • City Administrator’s office overlooks the city from the top of the citadel.
  • Huge amount of space for citizens to roleplay in the shacks and huts.
  • Plenty of sneaky places to get around the Combine.
  • Destructible buildings – Lots of walls and sometimes entire buildings can be blown apart. Experiment!
  • Color Correction for that….gritty feel.
  • PAK’d EP1/EP2 content, you only need CS:S to play this.
  • Hologram messages are displayed to the slum sectors according to what Dispatch message is triggered.

If not much of that list makes sense to you, witnessing the results of that technobabble in the screenshots below is the next best thing. Those of you that wish to download this map and peruse its contents can find it here.

These people are bloody brilliant. Where the hell does one find the the time and the will to completely re-skin a game to give somebody a little bit of nostalgia.
